why your google business profile isn’t showing up

you set up your google business profile months ago, but when you search for your own business or your services in your area, you’re nowhere to be found. it’s frustrating, and more common than you think.

here are the most common reasons your google business profile isn’t showing up, and what to do about each one.

1. your profile isn’t verified

this is the most basic, and most overlooked. issue. if you haven’t completed google’s verification process, your profile won’t appear in search results.

google typically verifies via:

  • a postcard mailed to your business address
  • a phone call or text message
  • email verification
  • video verification (for some businesses)

log into your google business profile and check the verification status. if it says “pending,” complete the process. it usually takes 5-14 days for the postcard.

2. your business information is incomplete

google prioritizes profiles that are fully filled out. if you’re missing key information, you’re at a disadvantage compared to competitors who completed every field.

make sure you have:

  • correct business name (no keyword stuffing)
  • complete address
  • phone number
  • website url
  • business hours
  • business description (use all 750 characters)
  • primary and secondary categories
  • service areas (if applicable)
  • photos (at least 10)

3. you chose the wrong categories

your primary category tells google what your business does. if it’s wrong or too generic, you won’t show up for the right searches.

common mistakes:

  • choosing “medical clinic” when “dermatologist” is more specific
  • using “consultant” when “marketing consultant” is available
  • not adding secondary categories for your other services

be as specific as possible with your primary category. google has hundreds of categories. find the one that best matches your core service.

4. you have nap inconsistencies

nap = name, address, phone number. if your nap is different across your website, google business profile, yelp, facebook, and other directories, google gets confused about which information is correct.

the kind of mismatch that quietly kills trust — even if one field is right

this confusion hurts your rankings. audit all your listings and make sure the information is identical everywhere. down to the format (e.g., “street” vs “st.”).

5. your website doesn’t support your gbp

google connects your business profile to your website. if your website doesn’t mention your location, services, or match the information on your gbp, you’re sending mixed signals.

your website should have:

  • your business name, address, and phone number in the footer
  • a dedicated page for each service you offer
  • location-specific keywords in your title tags and content
  • schema markup (localbusiness) matching your gbp data

proper local seo on your website directly supports your gbp rankings.

6. you have no reviews (or very few)

reviews are a major ranking factor for the map pack. if your competitors have 50-100+ reviews and you have 3, google considers them more relevant and trustworthy.

start building reviews systematically:

  • ask every client after a positive experience
  • send a direct link to make it as easy as possible
  • respond to every review. positive and negative
  • never buy fake reviews. google will penalize you

7. you’re outside the searcher’s proximity

proximity is the strongest ranking factor for local searches. if someone searches “dentist near me” and you’re 15 miles away while three dentists are within 2 miles, you probably won’t show up for that specific search.

proximity zones for local seo 0 to 2 km strong 2 to 5 km needs authority and 5 plus km near impossible
proximity decay is brutal — ranking odds collapse past 5 km

you can’t change your location, but you can:

  • optimize everything else so you rank when proximity is equal
  • build strong relevance signals (categories, content, reviews) to extend your reach
  • use google ads to appear for searches outside your immediate area

8. your profile has been suspended or disabled

google can suspend profiles for violating guidelines. common reasons:

  • keyword stuffing in the business name
  • using a virtual office or p.o. box address
  • creating multiple profiles for the same location
  • adding misleading information

if your profile was suspended, you’ll see a notification when you log in. follow google’s reinstatement process. it usually requires verifying your business again and fixing the violation.

9. you’re not posting or engaging

google rewards active profiles. businesses that regularly post updates, respond to reviews, answer questions, and add new photos signal to google that they’re active and engaged.

aim for:

  • 1-2 google posts per week
  • responses to all reviews within 24-48 hours
  • new photos monthly
  • answers to all questions in the q&a section

how to fix it

most gbp visibility issues come down to incomplete optimization, inconsistent information, or lack of activity. the good news: all of these are fixable.

if you’ve checked everything above and still aren’t showing up, there might be a deeper issue, duplicate listings, manual penalties, or technical problems with your website’s local seo.
